working on my boiled ham again
i started a little bit of writing about him the other night so that's the reason for all the art. also he is more fun to draw than other stuff rn
smiling is not in a manticore's repertoire. this best attempt comes accompanied by angery ears because he didn't wanna try, but ambrose says it's best not to scare the townsfolk they're supposed to be protecting. so smile, twist

Part 2 of me using this meme for my ocs (Part 1 here).
Warning for my really, really old art from when I first stated drawing and also blood + cigarettes this time around!

It's Thorne Crow's turn!
So of the Death Omens characters I'd argue Thorne has gone through the most change. When I first made Thorne I was really into making agile, assassin like female characters. She was supposed to be quick and nimble rather than an absolute powerhouse who brute forces her way through every fight. I also loved suppeerrrr long hair back then. It was about a year or so after that original drawing that I decided to give her a change. I wanted Thorne to be more of a brawler type character, for her to have a tough/rebellious vibe, and for her to look like she's gone through some rough situations to get to where she is today. She got a broader/muscular build, her signature vest, more scars, and her hair got chopped short. And all her following updates/redesigns would follow that same trend (with small changes to color palette and hair length; her first redesign gave her essentially a pixie cut in comparison to her current wolf cut, for example.)
There has been a few things that've stayed the same however. The hunter brand on her arm, for example, has made some changes in appearance and location, but its always been there. She's also always had her dark hair, a cigarette on hand, and a knack for gathering a concerning number of injuries during a fight.
(Also her long hair has made a comeback before, in an au design!! Ironically she is an actual assassin in this au lol)

I just found out Fyodor's cello piece from the 3rd season is called "Bird of death" and I find that interesting for a few reasons.
First of all, is it connected to Nikolai? They work together and -shipping aside - if they're actually friends, it would make sense for Fyodor to write a piece either for him or simply inspired by him. Not only are birds associated with Nikolai, but death as well since he was supposed to die by being cut in half. He also kills people, so if we combine all those things, they kind of make him a symbolic bird of death.
Secondly, it would make the cello scene have a slightly different atmosphere as Fyodor would be playing a piece he associates with his friend who's going to die after commiting a series of murders while a different murder is taking place. Also the situation would be even weirder for Katsura because it would mean he was kidnapped by a guy who didn't just play cello for him, but play a piece he associates with his friend. Of course Katsura would have no way of knowing, but still.
Thirdly, does that make Fyodor a bird of death? Because if it's not connected with Nikolai whatsoever, then it's most likely connected with Fyodor himself. It would make sense because he kills people as well, but would also accidentally make both Fyodor and Nikolai be associated with both birds and death (#matchingimagery).
Lastly, how much does studio Bones know?? I checked the dates of manga volume releases and Sunday tragedy chapters did come out back in 2017, so the team working on the anime would have enough time to integrate this title as an easter egg if they wanted to do that (as the 3rd season began in April 2019), but then again it seems like a random idea to allude to a character from a future arc that they weren't animating at the time. Either a member of the team was/is a fan of bsd or they're getting extra info on future events. Bones also seems to be making surprising decisions when adapting the material (such as putting Fyodor in Untold Origins), so I think it's possible they know something we don't.
But it's also possible that Bird of Death has a different meaning that I'm not aware of or it's all just a coincidence haha

When you've finished writing everything for a one-shot fic you've been working on for the past week or so, including figuring out what Ao3 tags to use, and making a short summary for said fic. But cannot figure out what the heck you're gonna title it....
Why is coming up with fic titles so hard?

You know what absolutely puzzles me about WxS's writing, specifically now, is that right now we're in the downtime fun times before the main conflict starts being introduced.
HoWever, why is every fucking event with the exception of like Emu5 so obsessed with cutting down the lighthearted mood with like suprisingly dark topics ?
Like I swear no other unit does this, usually when dark topics are introduced it's usually to fit the mood of the event and is meant to be tackled.
But like lemme list the 3 WxS event out of 4 in this arc that does this shit :
-Tsukasa4 -> Play literally is about a dude who wants to commit suicide by jumping into a river/the sea
-Rui4 -> This event is wack in general but the script of the entire script of that movie is like surprisingly messed up (depressed dude with implied suicidal ideation, and his sister who has a terminal illness who attempts to leave him so that he doesn't feel bad when she Dies)
-Tsukasa5 -> Buff dude (ik he has a name I just don't care) reveals that, in the past, he injured himself so badly that he is now completely unable to achieve his life long dream and also says about how had a deppressive period after the fact where he felt like he had no goal in life (depending on the translation there is possible implications of suicidal ideation but it's the same as Rui4 as it could just be a depression thing)
It's like so Weird, I haven't seen any other unit do this even in darker events. Like you guys know that this means that canonically the only unit that has had a descriptive mention of suicide (where the method is stated) is WxS right ?
Brother I thought this was silly fun time unit (if you ignore the periods of pain and misery) why the fuck is there like mentions of dark topics that not even other units tackle at times.
There are times where I do think certain units kinda do the same thing, VBS for exemple is a unit with Souma's backstory being similar to these sudden "oh..." moments. But the fact I even have to mention VBS, aka the unit with the most focus on side characters shows how strange this is.
I'm sure there are other examples but it just, still feels so incredibly strange.
It feels cheap to 0 in on the dark side of WxS but I probably wouldnt be doing that if it didn't so blatantly stand out in the writing.
It's not in a bad way but it is very much giving a strange vibe

Gosh yes, your tags on that last post. Like, I don’t blame people for liking Viren, for enjoying his character, for finding him sympathetic (or attractive, even if I personally don’t). He’s a compellingly written character! But don’t be offended if people hate him or find him evil… he’s the villain, that’s literally his role in the story
"How dare this villainous character do villainous things" / "how dare the protagonist get narratively rewarded for making good choices" like do y'all even hear yourselves sometimes, y'know?
especially when - and i cannot stress this enough - tdp is for children and will ultimately have a happy ending. this isn't a grown up drama or tragedy or even a grimdark fantasy by any means. it's a hopepunk high fantasy story. people who further retaliation and violence and push people into inherently defensive positions are the 'bad guys'
like i love viren! i think he's very well written and interesting. he's a great examination of how we can lie to and martyr ourselves in a search for security that is also about status & wanting to feel special, about the harm done when trying to win a rigged system rather than solidarity in tearing a system down and making a new one. i appreciate his dry/deadpan sense of humour. he's also one of two primary antagonists in the first 3 seasons. and like, all that can coexist? it's multifaceted character writing? we all presumably passed grade 10 english class?
i also cannot emphasize the importance of being able to separate audience reaction or response from what a piece of art is actually doing or saying enough. "this story is bad because it was personally upsetting to me" without examples given or analyzed it is not well, analysis, it's just a currently very unfounded opinion. and sometimes stories are supposed to be personally upsetting, so like. you also gotta know your lanes
it's why subjective analysis is very useful but learning structural (objective) analysis is arguably more important. something can be structurally pretty weak but very enjoyable (frozen). something can be abysmal enjoyment wise but very structurally solid (1984, which i'd argue isn't meant to be enjoyed, either). and it's important to know the difference if you want to write actual analysis rather than opinion based stuff. analysis isn't necessarily better than opinion based pieces but analysis is more expansive because it can cover the subjectivity and the objectivity and more. which is precisely why i can read "the iliad" and think "wow that was good" but if i wanted to write an essay on it i'd have to do a lot more thinking because i'm demanding something greater of that artistic experience by virtue of wanting to expand on it
a lot of people take "art for art's sake" as a statement regarding the fact that art - which is inherently symbolic in its construction, even in what meaning we construe to words themselves - doesn't have to mean anything and fighting back claims that art should mean something. but i think of "art for art's sake" is more worthwhile to examine under the lens of "this art doesn't exist for the sake of capitalist consumption, but amid it, or sometimes precisely in spite of it" and like. very few things artistically have zero meaning precisely because meaning is also "what was the reasoning behind this" and if there is none (think a tattoo you got "just because") that's typically a subjective reflection of the creator and still indicative of their personality. sometimes the meaning is meaninglessness (nihilism is still a creation in response to us searching for meaning, after all)
i'm getting into the weeds now but the point is that there's definitely been an upswing in recent years of people thinking opinions = analysis and while that often is the case (particularly if that opinion is expanded upon enough to be grounded in the text and the text's context) it absolutely is not as often actual analysis as people think it is

winter 2024 first impressions: ishura
Tumblr media
and so we ring in the new year with some beautiful doomed yuri that lasts only until a weird guy appear
typical
i picked this one up for the cast (romi park my beloved please arrive soon) and it's off to an alright start imo. the fight sequences were pretty good, visually, but the soundtrack didn't blow me away—and i really wish it did. the ost wasn't bad or anything, but if it had stood out more to me, i feel like it would have elevated the action scenes as a whole
the premise is remarkably simple so far, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. i often like simple, but it means the series will swim or sink based on its characters (who were mostly only namedropped towards the end of the first episode, so time will tell if they compel me)
one element of the worldbuilding i did like is there are these big mech type 'golems' facing off against humans, some of whom can use magic. exceedingly standard stuff
but then!
you see one of the golems using the same magic humans wield, which was a nice little twist i quite enjoyed. not sure if anything will become of that detail, since it seems like the series is shaping up to be more of a pvp battle royale than a pve humans vs golems type story
(side note this feels like it would make a pretty sick video game)
the weakest part of the first ep, to me, was the pacing. it just felt rushed, but that's mostly understandable since this ep was clearly just set-up for the 'main' plot. i feel like it might have benefited from being an hour-long episode, or maybe all this backstory would have felt more impactful if we saw it later, with the 'main' plot starting in medias res and circling back to this later? idk it wasn't The Worst, i just feel it (the pacing) could have been Better
also content warning for anyone who might need it: there was at least one instance of extremely graphic violence in this first ep, which i anticipate might continue through the series, so heads up on that
tl;dr it's fine so far

Y'know, one time I accidentally plagarised something for a paper I was writing and when the professor pointed it out to me, I was freaking out because I thought I was going to fail the class and be kicked out of school.
I haven't done anything like that since then because I've been ridiculously careful to quote shit when it's direct wording.

Hello, I know that this is not really a question, but I just wanted to tell you that if you are interested in sources regarding Mesopotamian religion and mythology, the blog https://yamayuandadu.tumblr.com/ will probably be very useful for you, it is the most approachable person with in-depth knowledge of the subject and has various articles and such (this is all assuming you don't already know them, in which case this information would be a bit useless)
Nope. I reblogged & followed that individual and immediately after I did, instead of just blocking me, they wrote an entire post about how they do not respect revive polytheist religions and that you shouldn't follow them or interact with them if thats your intent. They were an unnecessary asshole, remembering it and remembering how many likes they got specially by shitting on my religion just makes me anxious so they are blocked and their name is on my filter list so that I don't see reblogs of their posts. I avoid the anxiety which is sad because they do have an incredible amount of resources. But assholes will be assholes and there are a lot of them when it comes to religion. I went back to find the post and can't since I deleted my reblog of it but they must have deleted theirs eventually since I can't find it in their archives—only the post I made after it x.
